Unhappy Problems with saving

Hello! Yesterday I spent all day finishing an essay for school. I remember that during all the time I was doing the essay I was consistently and obsessively saving the document just to prevent anything from going wrong. I can't quite remember if I saved it when I finished but if I didn't I know for sure that I saved it just some moments before. I didn't shut down the computer, so it was turned on all night (as usual) and today when I tried to open the document it says something like "the file is saving and can't be opened until that operation is concluded". I tried emailing it to myself and what I got was the version of the document before I did anything on it yesterday, in other words, as it was two days ago. I've tried anything and I can't open it and the message keeps appearing. What can I do??? I need this document for today! The fact that it says it is still saving is giving me hope but I have no clue of what I can do to help it finish saving and let me open the document. Somebody PLEASE help me! Anyway, thank you for the time!
