Default Automatic Resetting on Body Numbered Style

Using Word 2000 -

I am setting up simple numbering. I can get the correct indents and tab into the Body Numbered style, but I cannot find a way to get the numbers to start at "1" whenever a new list occurs. Is there something I can read that will help me?

Despite the drive to avoid local formatting in favour of styles, in the case of separate lists you do need local formatting to force subsequent lists to restart. You do this by right clicking on the first para and choosing 'Restart at 1".

Having said that it is 'actually' possible to change the list behaviour to ensure each separate list begins with a restart. This is done by making the list an outline list and assigning the first level to be linked to a style that always appears between lists such as 'Normal' or 'Body Text'. The second level then is configured to restart after higher levels and would be linked to the 'Body Numbered' style you describe. By doing this, you can simply have at least one para of the top level sitting between 'lists' in order to restart the second one.

How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2003 and earlier versions | ShaunaKelly.com

As Andrew pointed out, you can have the top level not have a number. The next level restarts after the top level. This way, although you have the appearance of multiple lists, you are only using one list template.

You do not need to use heading styles for this, but the syles do need to have outline levels.

You can set up a multilevel list where the style you use for unnumbered paragraphs (perhaps Body Text or Normal) is associated with level 1 and your Body Numbered style is associated with level 2.
