Default TOC styling struggles

Hi Word wizards,

I've been trying to style a TOC but finding it tricky to get horizontal lines between each level (TOC 1, TOC 2 & TOC 3).

As you can see from the screen shot, I can get lines working for some of the levels, but for some reason, the TOC 1, won't show the border for some page headings.

Any thoughts what I can do to fix this?

This is how it looks with just one level, which might be clearer to see whats going on. Adding top and bottom borders to 'TOC 1' just adds them above and below the list, not between each heading.

Sorted it, for anyone else trying to do the same thing, try using the main styles panel, which gives more border options (rather than the one you access via the TOC section (under References in the ribbon)

I do not know how you reached it. The way I would do it would be to select two of the entries in the TOC for the same level and add an interior border. I think you meant the Borders control in the paragraph group of the Home tab.

This should modify the TOC1 style and do it for all entries of that level. It may also handle the lower levels if your TOCx styles cascade.

To add to what Charles has said, even if you are modifying a paragraph style, you will have to select two consecutive pararaphs so that you can access the interior horizontal border.

I was originally trying to adjust the borders via the 'References' menu, but that doesn't give u a 'middle' border option for some reason.

Border menu when accessed via 'References / TOC'

Border menu when accessed via the main styles ribbon:

Not sure why one allows a 'middle' border and the other doesn't!

Actually, it doesn't really make sense, but it is how it works. :-)

You get no between-paragraph border control when you access the Borders and Shading when in only a single paragraph. It does not give you internal borders. When your selection spans at least parts of two paragraphs, it does.
