I use numbered paragraph (in the format x.x.x etc.) in my word docents.

I frequently use cross references to refer to paragraph numbers in my documents.

From time to time, I end up deleting paragraphs (which are not being cross referred to). The paragraphs which are being cross referred to sometime therefore change their paragraph number.

Something is going wrong with the cross referencing. The paragraph number displayed by the cross reference stays on the old paragraph number. If I follow the hyperlink of the cross reference, it goes to the right place (the correct paragraph with its new paragraph number).

Selecting the whole document and clicking F9 does not have any effect.

I am running Microsoft office 2013.

Any ideas?

If, for example, you look at the defined terms at the start of the document, there is a definition of Partnership shares (on page 3). There is cross reference which, on the face of it refers to rule 7. In fact, it should display rule 6. If you click to follow the hyperlink of the cross reference, it correctly links to rule 6.

This problem came about because I deleted the old rule 4 in this document, causing all the paragraphs from rule 5 onward to re-number. However, all of the cross references stay stubbornly displaying the wrong rule number, although correctly linking to the right part of the document.

I looked at your sample. I pressed Ctrl+A and then F9.
The cross-reference numbers updated.
With default settings, going to print preview also updates the reference fields.

I have just thought of something - we tend to operate in a cloud environment.

As an experiment, I tried to update the references in the cloud - my problem remains.

I then tried the same document outside of cloud, and the references updated.

What's going on?

I just tried it with the document on OneDrive and they updated as well.

Are you using OneDrive as your cloud storage location? Are you opening the document from within the locally installed version of Word?

Note that the online version of Word has limited capabilities. For one thing, it doesn't support fields fully.
