Word field - table numbering - appendix
Dear All,
I would like to have a table numbering in the appendices that would work like this: Table An-x: titletitletitle with n being the Appendix number and x being the table number which is reset to 1 at the beginning of each appendix. I found a very simple way to do something similar in the main text: e.g. Table {STYLEREF 1 \s}-{SEQ Table \s 1} (which would reset table number after Header 1) But when I tried to do the same in the appendix, the table numbering is not working correctly e.g. Table A{STYLEREF "Rep Appendix 1" \s}-{SEQ Table \s "Rep Appendix 1"} => gives the nth table of the Table list (the number is not reset to 1 in each appendix) "Rep Appendix 1" is the name of the style I have used for the Appendix headers. Please refer to word example attached. It is also not working when creating a new Table list: e.g. Table A{STYLEREF "Rep Appendix 1" \s}-{SEQ Table_A \s "Rep Appendix 1"} => gives Table 1 in Appendix 1. But it does not reset the numbering after Appendix 2. Does someone know a way to do the job ? Please note that if my message is not clear, I have attached a simple example Thanks in advance Cheers |

Dear JimP,
Thanks for your quick reply and interesting link. I had already tried this solution (using Heading 6 for Appendix as a workaround) but It yielded another problem: in the navigation panel, the appendix are shifted on the right (at the level of Heading 6) and are no more aligned with Heading 1. Besides, the Appendices are like 'included' in the last main chapter of the document in the navigation panel, which is something I wanted to avoid (I attached an update of the example according to this solution). According to this link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/getting-appendix-heading-outline-levels-correct-in. some posts indicated that there is no way to avoid that problem. Do you confirm? |

Word is and forever is likely to be imperfect. It is not Wordperfect!
I was a contributor to that thread and stand by the assertion that you can do one or the other but not both. You can use the chapter numbering for your appendix figures or you can have them at a higher level in the Navigation Pane. Little to be done about the Navigation Pane. Shauna's method is still the best. It is designed for handling figure numbering and the Table of Contents. I suppose you could use Heading 2 or 3 only in Appendices. It would tend to make the numbering a bit wonky. How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly You can put the beginning title Appendices in Heading 1 style to separate them out. That is: In the Table of Contents you can easily correct formatting. |
