Unhappy Partialy stopping auto-correct in Word 2019

In previous versions of Word, I have been able to prevent Word from fixing typos. The reason is that Word changes perfectly correct words to totally incorrect words without asking. For example, I teach New Testament studies as an online adjunct. I can't count the number of times that Word corrected a student's word, pericope, to periscope. There are no periscopes in the New Testament and I doubt that classical Greek has such a word either. In my own work, which deals with intertextuality, over and over Word wants to change that to intersexuality. Totally wrong and goofy. I have added some of my special vocabulary to the dictionary in each version of Word, since the dictionary does not seem to migrate.

I am proofreading a lengthy document and finding places at which Word punted and made a change that is wrong. For example, I don't know what I typed but Word changed whatever typo I had for "what" was changed to "wheat." I would far rather have Word leave my typos alone and let me fix them via spell-checking than change therm to words that are spelled correctly but wrong. I find it more difficult during proofreading to spot one fo these "corrected" words.

I'm fine with Word fixing two initial capitals. Since even CMS has gone to the dark side and is requiring smart quotes now, it is okay with me if Word changes my quote marks. It is not okay for Word to change anything it thinks is wrong. I was able to turn this off in 2003, and Word 2007. I don't see a place in the auto-correct options to leave typos alone. Since Word is not smart enough to know what to leave alone, I want to stop its auto-correct function. Ironically, the one thing I wish it would flag, a num4ber in the mi2ddle of a word, it ignores. Anyway, how do I stop this? Thanks.

Ken

First, tell Word to not AutoCorrect from the dictionary.
You can also turn AutoCorrect off, but the first step should be sufficient.
