multiple references to single exhibit by letter
I'm a lawyer. I'm drafting a client affidavit as she describes her various expenses. So I describe her housing and want to attach the lease as Exhibit A. I would like that "A" to be a field so if I reorder my text, the exhibits reorder automatically. I'm using the insert caption for this.
I describe lots of expenses, frequently attaching proof as an exhibit, B-F, etc. Now I want to attach her credit card statements. In later paragraphs I will also refer to the credit card statements by exhibit letter. I want these references to be by field so if I reorder the paragraphs, the cross reference remains accurate. The easy way to do that would be to make the credit card statements first, so everything would always be Exhibit A. But that would be cheating. I tried using the cross reference feature, but it has no option to select the captions. I hope that I've given enough detail to explain my problem. Many thanks. |

It does not reference Captions as such but does reference the captions for tables, figures, etc.
Is the lease actually a figure in the document, or simply an attachment. The Cross-Reference can also be to a Heading. You could use Heading 9 act as your captions. (I am also a lawyer.) Insert a Caption - Complex Documents Complex Documents - Cross-References |

The way cross-references actually work is that Word adds a hidden bookmark around the source text and then adds a cross-reference to that bookmark.
You can do the same by first adding a bookmark around the field that is associated with the exhibit (give it a bookmark name that reflects the exhibit name, not the current number). Then you go to the usual Insert Cross-Reference dialog and choose the bookmark. Note that you MAY need to update the fields twice if the first update does the cross-ref before the seq field has been updated.
