Format a list of figures
Hello,
I need to format my table of figures as in the picture. Right now the figure label appears immediately after the figure number, and the wrapped words are at the left margin. If I place a tab between figure number and the start of the figure caption, the entire line jumps to the next line and doesn't indent at all. How can I accomplish this? Thanks! |

Thank you, but that doesn't tell me how to do it. I see you were able to do it, but how? Like, I put the cursor after the figure number and press the tab key but it gets all messed up for some reason. What do I do to insert a tab other than, you know, inserting a tab?

As the post in the link says:

O.k. I see that now. I cannot figure out how you modified the paragraph and alignment settings. Is there a way I can inspect them in your example so that I can do it the same way in mine? I tried "Edit Field" and I got nowhere. How would I view what you set them to be?

The paragraph alignment and tab settings for the 'Table of Figures' Style have nothing to do with the Field code as such. If you click on the paragraph break at the end of any of the 'Table of Figures' entries, the paragraph alignment and tab settings for the 'Table of Figures' Style will all be apparent - as they also will if you expand the Styles dropdown (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-S), scroll down to the 'Table of Figures' Style and hover over it.

Thank you macropod for all your kind help, but I tried to use exactly what I found in your example and got the error message: "That's not a valid tab stop".
PLEASE, ANYONE ELSE READING THIS. I am desperate. I need to finish this and this is one of the last steps. I am willing to pay you to help me do this!! Send me a PM and I can use paypal or whatever you want. I just need my list of figures to look like the one in the example above. If anyone can tell me how to do this, or walk me through I will pay for your time. Thank you!! |

Well, 'Left + 6.3"' isn't a valid measurement; you've conflated the tab-stop alignment and position. In any event, you'll need to use position values suitable for your own document, without seeing which no-one here knows what they will be.
PS: Kindly don't solicit help via PM or offer payment.

O.k.,
Since I tried doing what you suggested previously and can't figure that out, is there a way to copy the style from your example and paste that style into my document? Thanks. |

If you click on your own 'Table of Figures' paragraph break, you can insert tab-stops & change the alignment via the Ruler in exactly the same way as you'd do anywhere else in the document. You can then right-click and choose Styles>Update Table of Figures to Match Selection.
As for copying the Style from the demo document, you could do that (in your own document) via Developer|Document Template>Templates>Organizer to copy the Style from the 'Figures.docx' file into your document. You still risk ending up with a format that doesn't quite match what you want to do, though.

Thanks for all your input macropod. I don't want to end up messing up anything with the Developer stuff. I just ended up doing it with the spacebar. I had no idea it would be so hard to simply insert some tabs!

It's actually very simple...
Doing it with the spacebar is futile! Anytime the 'Table of Figures' gets refreshed (e.g. when you print the document or need to update it to reflect edits in the document body) all that work will be erased.
