Paragraph Numbering on the Right of Text
Good day everybody.
Since this is my first post, I would like to thank everyone in advance for any kind of assistance/information they can offer regarding the following need. In particular, I am trying to find out if Word can insert (ideally automatically) numbering of paragraphs, not on the left of the text, but on the right. I have noticed that there are books (especially about law) that on the first page they have such numbering of paragraphs on the right and the second page on the left. As attached you will find the specific page I am talking about. Is this something that can be done with Word or do you need any kind of desktop publisher? I have been using MS Office 2010 and haven't found out such an option and Google didn't help at all. Regardless of what I tried I could not achieve to reproduce the same kind of format/layout. Any ideas? Once again thank you for your trouble. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 01-10-2019 at 06:30 AM. Reason: delete text for moderator |

This could be done, but it is far from Automatic.
You would need to do it for each paragraph. I will try to prepare and post a sample document. What is involved is using mirrored marginal frames to hold the numbers and using a SEQuence Field in the frame to hold the number. |

Once set up, this could be created as an AutoText entry, I suppose. Although it wouldn't be completely automatic, it would still be manageable.

Here is a temporary link to a template and sample document that do this. I attempted to explain the process in the template. To use it, you would put the template in your Word Startup Folder. There are no macros in these files. The Frame is set in a paragraph style. Then the Sequence field is inserted in the frame. Then this is saved as an AutoText entry so that both the frame and the number can be inserted as a whole. As set up, the frame will handle numbers up to 9999. Template with Marginal Paragraph Numbering This is a zip file with both the template and a sample document. 00 deleteme 2.png
The way I have this set up, the text in the frame is right-justified. It is also formatted for "keep with next" so that the number doesn't end up on a different page than then text. To really use this, you are going to need to understand SEQuence Fields and frames. Also, if you insert the AutoText entry more than once for a paragraph, you will get overlapping frames and a skipped number. You won't see the underlying frame that would be using a number. Indeed! :-)
Thinking about this further, I wonder if enabling right-to-left text direction would also work. I haven't tested, but we sometimes get reports here or in the Microsoft Community that text has acquired right-to-left formatting by mistake. Here, that would seem to be an advantage.

So, Sontal, are you overwhelmed? After you've had a chance to look at the template, write back if you have any questions.

The attached document makes use of right-to-left text direction to put paragraph numbers on the right. I applied this to the built-in List Number style.
Since no right-to-left language support has been added and an ordinary Western font (Times New Roman) is being used, the text will be readable as left-to-right, while paragraph numbers are displayed on the right.

Pretty much any solution is going to have issues but there is another option worth considering.
I would do this with a two column table and hidden borders. A style for the second column could then do the numbering automatically.

Wow guys. Now there's some study I will have to do when I get back home from work.
My initial thought, not as an expert of course, but not as a complete ignorant as well, was to utilize 2 columns as Guessed mention, but my first attempts were far from desirable. Before deciding to utilize your expertise, I did saw around the suggestion of right to left text, but, I don't know, it didn't seem right, thinking that a so sophisticated word processor like Word (at least in its latest version) would have foreseen such a need and provided an easy and simple solution. It's not like you can't have automatic paragraph numbering (but only on the left) anyway. I will try all provided solutions and see which one works better. Once again I'm really thankful for all the valuable information you shared and I do hope that this question will assist others who may have been in such position. Honestly I thought that it would be quite easy and maybe with just 2-3 clicks! Maybe one day Microsoft will implement this ability. |

Either the right-to-left method or the two-column table method will work if you only want numbers to the right. If you want them mirrored for duplex printing you will need to use the method I describe.
Note that if you also have ordinary numbering on your paragraphs, i.e. at the beginning, as well as the marginal numbers, you probably would want to use the method I set forth (which does not have to be mirrored). If you are using either of the other methods, you should review and use the methods for numbering set forth in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. That numbering is attached to styles. When I think of it, I would guess that the method with frames could also use style-based numbering rather than the SEQ field. |

Here is another one that uses Frames and list numbering with no AutoText. It could be used as a Quick Style Set. It uses the Body Text and FrameMargin styles as alternating styles.
