Default Aligning text when using multiple level numbered list?

I am creating technical documents and it is being numbered as:

1 Testing
1.1 Testing
1.1.1 Testing
1.1.1.1 Testing

I would like all of the "testing" text to be aligned vertically, and the numbering can float in the left margin. I would like it to look like so (without periods):

..........1 Testing
.......1.1 Testing
....1.1.1 Testing
.1.1.1.1 Testing

I would like to build this format into my styles gallery so I can create documents from a template that follow these rules.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Jace

The only way I've found to do this is by modifying the First line indent and the hanging indent for each style.

So I suppose I can just play around with those settings until I figure it out? I have tried that method but I cannot seem to get a consistent alignment for text in all heading styles.

You need to use the multilevel list dialog to change the indents, not the paragraph formatting or style formatting.
Set up following the directions on this page.
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly

Shauna uses the built-in heading styles, but you can set up your own styles with outline levels set.

That looks like exactly what I need. Thank you very much for your help.

Hi there

We have been using a fully customised List Style (up to 6 levels) as explained in the link posted above for some years now.

Today, I was asked to right aligned automatic numbering of list. I thought that changing settings (from "left" to "right") in List style would do but no, it doesn't!

When I select "Right", you can see that the tab is disappearing and following automatic numbering (when I press Enter) don't have a tab neither. Oh yeah, and when I press "Tab" to create the tab, sure it goes to second level (the way it should be).

So I am stuck. I have tried different settings in "follow number with" or "Tab stop at", etc. but I keep getting numbers right aligned but without a tab after.

Any hep would be welcome.
(I have continued this thread as topic is same; if new thread need to be created, let me know)

Thanks

Since all measurements are relative to the left margin, a lot of "tweaking" will be required to get this right.

I recommend that you start a new thread for this question.

Sure, but we use only one page layout so margin and layout doesn't change.

To me, it's a MS Word bug/glitch

I shall create new thread and reshare pictures with ruler (and tabs).

  1. You can have multiple margins in a page using continuous section breaks. This is generally a very bad idea, though. It causes real editing headaches. Margins and Indents in Word
  2. Again, you want to be using the procedures set forth in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly
  3. That said, see Number Alignment 2007 and later by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP, which may have an answer for your problem. Look at aligning on punctutation in that page.

You've aligned at 2.2 cm and set a tab setting at 1 cm (before your number).
There is a built-in tab setting that will catch your text. Set your next tab setting at 2.5 cm or whatever you want, but past where you have set your alignment point.

1. Lost in translation here. I have no issue with break and sections
2. Been through the documentation, I am very familiar with all that already.
3. If I am not wrong, article talks about alignment by the dot for numbers in text/table (and not for automated list numbering)

Your answer has been helpful. After different tries, I found out that formatting of paragraph itself (here "Normal_Number) need to be adjusted... made some progress although not getting what I want.

Oddly, paragraph "Hanging" and list's "text indent at" are linked... if you change value of one, then value of the other is also changing.

I shall revert back tomorrow but will tell my boss that anyway, numbered list right-aligned to the dot is pretty ugly, numbers are aligned with headers and it makes the number float.

Thanks for your help
