Hello Everyone i am writing my thesis here is one issue to which is that ,, every chapter take caption number correctly according to the chapter but only chapter 3 take caption number 1 why i have searched and try alot for that but did not find any solution

Can you give examples of what you mean to better understand the problem? Screenshots will help, too.

First, I want to say that your ability with English far exceeds my ability in any other language.


However, I am unsure I understand your problem.


Do you want your figures to contain the Chapter Number?


Do you want the numbering to restart at the beginning of each chapter?


You are able to do this for figures in Chapter 3 but not others?

So you want the caption for the figure to be 3-13 and it is showing 1-13?


Please go to the caption and press Alt+F9 to show the field. Let us know what that looks like. Remember to press Alt+F9 again to toggle display back.


Where is the "3" in Chapter 3 coming from? Is it an Automatic number in the heading style, or one you typed?

Dear Charles Kenyon Yes i have selected heading 3 as auto number not manually but it still show chapter 1,,,

Your caption field is correct to pick up the number from the last heading 1.
That is the { StyleRef 1 \s } part. It gets the number from the preceding paragraph using Heading 1.
Your caption's Sequence field should also be restarting the numbering of the figure at 1 following a Heading 1. That is the \s 1 switch in that field. If this is the first figure in Chapter 3, it should show up as 3-1, not 3-13.


I would guess that your Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 are not using that Heading 1 Style even if it looks like they are.

Click in each of those headings without selecting any text. Press Ctrl+Alt+1 when your insertion point is in the heading.

Then go back to your caption and click on it. Press F9.

i have tried but nothing happen what is the problem

chapter 4 ,5,6 works fine but only chapter 3 have this issue what will be the problem

Did you do what I asked using Ctrl+Alt+1? You reapplied Heading 1 to the two Chapters?
I believe the problem is that Chapters 2 and 3 do not have the Heading 1 style applied as a paragraph style.

Your are right sir the problem is that you are telling but ctrl+alt+1 does not work nothing happen

look at the picture heading is already applied but still does not work

The problem is that you do not have Heading 1 style with automatic numbering applied to your heading. I would bet on it.


The numbering must be set up following the instructions given here:

With your next response, attach a copy of the document, purged of confidential material with at least the cover page for your Chapter 3.
