This err msg causes too long a save function: Microsoft Word non-commercial use (not responding)
I have a 54,000 word document I'm writing and every time I hit control + S to save my work, it takes half a minute to save the work. How do I fix this, so I can save my edits faster?

Turn OFF the background saves option in File > Options > Advanced > Save > Allow background saves.
Is the file saved on your hard drive? It can be a lot slower to save if it has to happen across a network rather than locally on the hard disk.

reply to Guessed
Hi Guessed,
Thanks very much for your reply. That was an interesting exercise in the back office of Word. I had already taken the advice in another thread to just repair Word and that handled the problem COM-PLEEETLY! ahh, Thank God! That was so frustrating waiting for it to save, sitting on my hands doing nothing for 10,20,30 seconds. anyway, i did try your solution for the helluv it and it didn't make any difference either way, so i've left allow background saves checked. i did a little research about background saves on the web and it didn't reveal the negatives. are there any negatives about allowing them? thanks! Pete, I didn't see the other thread but glad you have worked out the problem.
I haven't used Background Save for a long time but when it first appeared as an option it was very ordinary. In principle, it should have been just like background printing and that would have made sense. For me however, it made saving a file exceptionally slow. Something that would take 2 seconds to save would take about 20 seconds to save. Now if it just did it in the background that would have been OK but it didn't. While it was saving, I still couldn't type or change anything in the file - Word's resources were completely consumed by the background save so it was just a pointless exercise using that option. Perhaps Microsoft have improved the background save functionality in recent versions of Word and I just don't know because I don't ever use it. I don't ever work on machines/files that take more than a few seconds to save so I don't see the need to ever use it anyway.
