Word 2007 - Document returns to first page without warning and does not save last edits.
Word 2007 fully updated running on Windows 10 Home.
After typing a few paragraphs in an existing document (docx) Word suddenly moved the cursor to the first line on the first page. At the time I was working on page 39. I went back to where I was typing and the new paragraphs were gone. They had not been saved. This has happened a couple of times since yesterday and the Document Recovery pane did not appear each time it happened. Word does not completely crash, i.e., shut down. I have been working on this document for over a year off and on and never had a problem until yesterday when this behavior started. On one occasion I saved my work after typing a paragraph and the cursor jumped to the first page again and the paragraph was not saved. I'm at a loss to know why this is suddenly happening and what to do about it. |

Does the problem occur in a specific document, only?
If you see it in multiple documents, try starting Word in Safe mode and see if that works around the problem (temporarily). See https://support.office.com/en-us/art...3-528af4f7ac72 for more. Note that Safe mode is for troubleshooting; you are not supposed to run Word in that mode permanently.

I haven't worked on any other existing documents as yet, but you have a good point. I'll check it out. I read about starting Word in Safe mode but I'm not sure what to do after that. If it works normally in Safe mode I'm not sure what that tells me about the source of the problem.

While working on something else I had the same document open and minimized. When I returned to it about 30 minutes later there was a message in the autorecovery pane that said something like "Document repaired, error in the description of a bookmark". Sorry, I can't remember the exact wording but it had to do with a bookmark problem.
It hasn't reoccurred since I saved the repaired version, but I will wait a few days before I sound the all clear. |

But the error is being generated by a specific document? In that case, I recommend the following: Click the ¶ icon on the Home tab to display nonprinting marks. Copy all the content, minus the final paragraph mark (¶) of the document, into a new, blank document. That will usually get rid of any damaged structures (corruption) in the document.

When I was searching for a solution I did read that the document information is stored in the last paragraph mark. I assume that copying without the last mark will solve the problem. I hope so. A lot of blood sweat and tears have gone into this document and I would hate to lose it. Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is the idea. Sometimes, damaged structures may be stored in section breaks within the document. If that is the case, you will have to copy content section by section, and carefully omit each section break, and also omit the final paragraph mark (which really includes an "invisible" section break).

Stefan, I hope you are still following this thread.
I've had several crashes in Word 2007 with this one file I am working on. I reported this previously and was told that the file may be corrupted. I copied the file without the last paragraph mark, deleted all the page and section breaks and saved the file with a new name. This worked for awhile but now when this file crashes the repaired document appears in the Recovery Panel and when I view what was repaired it indicates "Bookmark 1". Highlighting the bookmark and clicking "Goto" leads back to the start of the document with no bookmark found. To view existing bookmarks I click Insert | Bookmarks and the bookmarks box opens and there are none, not even hidden ones. One time I even got an "exception violation" (not exact wording) and Word crashed without saving a recovery document. I'm at a loss as to what I can do since I am losing text every time Word crashes. |

Try deleting the section breaks first, and then copy the file, minus the final paragraph mark, into a new document. In case you have already done it that way (unsuccessfully), perhaps you can share the document with the forum?

Hi again Stefan. I gave up trying to find a solution so I just copied the entire document, pictures, graphics, styles and text and pasted it into Notepad which removed all formatting as well as everything else. I pasted that into a new Word docx and all is well for the last week. I can always add the pics later which is what I should have done from the beginning.
At least I now know that it was the document and not my Word installation that was at fault. Thanks for all your help. |

Thanks for the follow-up.
Sometimes, starting fresh is the best policy, but it may be time-consuming, of course.
