Default How to enable features in the Ribbon in a protected template

Hi,

I've created a Word 2010 template to be used in a company workgroup to try and establish some writing standards. While I've protected the template using the 'Restrict Editing' feature, I am being called by users who want to do more, for example, insert a Section Break (Next Page). The Restrict Editing feature unfortunately locks some of these features.

How can I enable some of these additional features while still restricting editing access to the styles?

Advice appreciated.

Carl

There are a bunch of Restrict Editing options. The most restrictive of which is "Filling in Forms." That is almost never the appropriate method for newly created forms. That is a control for legacy form fields.

The simplest is to select an area and apply a Group content control over it. The only things that can be edited inside such a control are content controls.

Another is "No changes ... with exceptions." You can set an exception where you want someone to be able to make changes.

Here are some resources that may help you.

Thanks Charles for coming back.

It's not a form that I've created but rather a document/report template. I've looked at content controls but I'm concerned that if I make it more complicated to use they will find a way around it or discard the template altogether. The target audience are engineers of different disciplines and this report template was an attempt to provide something of a standard format that they could use and make limited changes to while keeping the styles locked down.

But thanks for the pointers. I'll look into those further.

Cheers

Content controls allow you to have fixed lockable areas in which to input information without affecting the rest of the document and should be considered. They are also more practical then legacy form fields, especially for data extraction, and do not require the document to be protected.

For ease of insertion see https://www.gmayor.com/insert_content_control_addin.htm. However I have been working on a major update for a few weeks. It is almost completed and is in the final stages of testing. It adds editing facilities and a number of other useful functions for template creators. I hope to have it on the site over the weekend. If you would like a preview copy, contact me via my web site.

There is a lot more in depth information about content controls on Greg Maxey's site - http://gregmaxey.com/word_tips.html .
