Starting page numbering at a selected number
I have a 250 page document containing my travel diaries over the last 30 years. I want to be able to insert header pages which I have printed separately using Excel in between each trip. I printed the 250 page documents before realising that the pages were printed continuously so that in many cases the end of one trip would be on the other side of the beginning of the next trip, stopping me from inserting a header page between them. I considered breaking up the total document into individual files and printing them individually but realised that each new file (or trip) would begin at page 1 rather than carry on from the last trip. Can I insert some sort of page break between trips so that I can insert the page header sheets?

It is called a Section Break.
Insert one before you want to restart numbering. Then, under Insert Page Number use the format page numbers command to tell Word to restart numbering. Page Numbers in Word 2007-2019 Numbering Front Matter (Ribbon) by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP |

Thanks for your help. I have inserted page breaks as you suggest. Can I check to see if the breaks are in the right place without printing all 250 pages?

Not Page breaks.
Section breaks. This is a big deal. Make sure. How many of these did you insert? |

Do you have the status bar displaying both the page number and the formatted page number? The section number?

Thanks again. I misread your instructions and entered page breaks throughout the document. Fortunately I saved the edited document as a copy and can delete it and inset section breaks as per your last message. I will do this and report the results. When I have finished can I see the results on screen, possibly through Print Preview?

Are you restarting the page numbers throughout your document?
If not, why are you inserting section breaks. You do not want to be casually inserting section breaks. Here is my chapter on Sections. Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word (Ribbon Versions) |

No, I am not restarting page numbering. I have a number of travel journeys I have collated in the one document. I want each journal to be separate so I can insert a page containing the journey title (e.g. Asia 1997) and a map. For this reason I don't want the first page of a journey starting on the reverse side of the last journey (I am printing in duplex mode). The page numbering will be continuous.

You will need the Odd page section breaks for each of your separate journeys.

Unless you want to restart page numbering in every section, in the first section break you insert after you've restarted numbering, go into the Format Page Numbers dialog and tell the page numbering there to continue from the previous.
