Default Cannot make summation work in Word 2016

I am using MS 2016 as a scientific word with a lot of mathematical equations. It has not been easy.

It seems that everything depends on what you can put in a box on the screen.

Anyway, I have attached a screen capture shot to illustrate my problem.

I am using capital sigma for a summation; it works sort of. The first screen shot shows what I got. The indexes on the summation are squeezed in to summaton; they are not on the top and the bottom of the summation as I want.

I did select the correct form after clicking on inserrt. See second attached screen shot.

I want them to look this way, not he way they look in the first screen shot. As I said, select the correct form, but still got the unwanted look.

How canI avoid this?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

James M. Yunker

Your screenshot suggests you've used the wrong summation format - there are two available for you to select from. Since you say you selected the correct format, can you attach a document to a post with the problem equation (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen. That will make it easier to diagnose.

Default I am aware there are two formats to use

I know that are two formats. I selected the opened up one and got the other one instead.

MS Word gives me the compact one regardless of which one I select : that is the question.

I select the opened up one and get the compact one. How can get only the opened up one.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lou Reed

You may want to switch to MathType.
The old Equation Editor was based on an abbreviated version of the commercial product MathType.
http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/

You can download the free 30-day trial and should be able to edit your legacy equations. If you let the trial lapse, you will be left with the equivalent of the old Equation Editor.

Here is a link to Microsoft's page on the new Equation Editor.

Using MathType as a workaround is suggested on this Microsoft Page:

Default Another way

Is there another way. I do not think that they (my supervisor) will let me install Mathtype on my work computer. I can ask, but I think that I know what they will say.

I just need another way to do this. Everything works except the summation. I click on the summation form that is spread out and see everything the way I would want. Then when it gets on the page, it is in that compact form. I do not want that.

Is there another way to correct this without installing and using Mathtype.

Respectfully,

Lou Reed

I do not know because I did install Mathtype.

All I can recommend is to install it on your own computer at home and see if it does what you want. If it does, you have a compelling argument for your boss. Again, there is no charge.

Otherwise, try posting a sample document here. Someone who is not using Mathtype can examine it and give suggestions. Often a screenshot does not convey the needed info. How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum.
Paul suggested this a couple of days ago.
