Default Putting ^ above a variable in MS Word 2016

I am trying to make a simple change in a variable in MS Word 2016.

I am trying to put a hat on a variable yi. I cannot do so. I have tried many things.

None seem to work.

I can only put the hat or ^ next to the variable, not above it.

I am confused a to how to do this.

The attached file shows the incorrect way that it is done now.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Lou_Reed
