I don't see a box, so I'm guessing you are talking about Text Boundaries.
See Text Boundaries Display in Microsoft Word
It is a display option set in your Word program.

If you are referring to field shading, there is an option to hide it in the Options dialog box. In Word 2007, click Office button | Word Options | Advanced and then choose an option for field shading.

If this is what you are talking about, it is field shading.

I usually keep this set to show shading when selected.
