Default Find and Replace "^&" no longer working

Hi all,
I used to be able to do a quick search for all italicized words and phrases in a document and put the html codes on either side of them with a search and replace. That's no longer working. Anyone know why or how I can get it working again?

I used to leave the Find window blank and choose italics in the Font window; put ^& in the Replace window and hit Replace all. Now I get garbage--hundreds of pages of and none of my italics marked.
Thanks!
Merry

FWIW it still works in the latest build of Word 2016.

Thanks! For some reason it's stopped working for me. Just when I really needed it for work!
