The ribbon customisation needs to be done to either your Normal.dotm template or the working template can be loaded as an addin.

If you were happy with the template as it previously worked, but it only worked when 'attached' then you could just load that template as an addin. The simplest way to do that is to save the template into your %appdata%/Microsoft/Word/Startup folder.

If you need more info, you will need to provide a clearer description of your problem.
Did you use the built-in GUI to add the ribbon customisations or some other (better) method?
Are the macros in the same template as as the ribbon customisations?
Do you want this to work on machines other than your own?
