can't remove page break that isn't visible in nonprinted characters

In the middle of a paragraph, I have a page break. When I tried to view it in show unprinted characters, it isn't there. The ones I set are there. I can't delete it, and I can't work around it. If I delete the paragraph and try to retype it, the break shows up in the same place.

What do you see with nonprinting marks displayed? Does the text just flow onto the next page or is there a paragraph mark (¶) present?

I'm seeing a manual page break before Chapter 39.


Where possible, I use page-break-before paragraph formatting for my Heading 1 style.

The problem is in the misplaced page break between Barbara teaching all the and children.
I have even tried deleting the entire paragraph and retyping it, but the break comes back in the exact same place.

That page break is a soft one, that is, it has been created by Word, not people editing the document. To figure out why it occurs, at the very least you have to upload a screen shot of the full page, that is, choose to show the white space between pages in Print Layout view. Ideally, you should upload an attachment in Word format for us to look at.

Here is the full page. I had to size down to 55% to get it all in. Interestingly, the navigation panel to the left shows the pages as they would appear, and there is no page break in those pages. Maybe I can just ignore that arrant page break. Or would it show up again once I uploaded it to a web page?

Uploading screenshots isn't particularly helpful, which is why Stefan referred to "an attachment in Word format". Regardless, what you're referring to is an automatic page break, which you can only delete by reformatting/editing the content so it requires fewer pages. For example, your screenshot evidences the random presence of empty paragraphs. Deleting those throughout the document will likely reduce the page count.

As Paul/macropod wrote, the screen shot only reveals some superfluous paragraph marks which should be deleted. Beyond that, remove any manual page breaks that you don't need. Also, you could look for "Page break before" formatting applied to text paragraphs.
