In this screenshot I show a page with a line highlighted by a yellow box. I'm hoping someone can tell me why the orphan/widow control feature doesn't make that line move to the following page? As you can see, on that page there is only room for a single line of text due to the size of the figure.

Word's Reveal Formatting Methods

It's a line in a paragraph. Here's another one:

Is the graphic wrapped and, in that case, which paragraph contains the anchor? There might be a conflict here, because a wrapped graphic will always be on the same page as the anchor paragraph.

Yes; I think that's what was happening. I fixed it by pressing Enter after the word 'Given', typing 'Given' again and then going back and deleting the first 'Given', leaving the anchor on an empty paragraph.

Alternatively, put the graphics (as well as other objects) "In line with text." This will give you more control.

I'm afraid inline with text just causes me more problems. If I use inline with text then I will inevitably have blank spaces appear whenever an image is too big to fit at the end and gets shunted over to the next page, leaving a gap just a bit smaller than the image.

I want to use "fixed on page" which is not an option if I use in-line with text. With my image insisting on having an anchor in the text I'm forced to have a single line on a page with the only way to get around it to be to include an empty line in the middle of my paragraph.

I am of the opinion that I should not have to format text by using line breaks, tabs and spaces like most people do because it's easier than learning to use the software.

My ideal solution would let me set an anchor in a paragraph but also allow that paragraph to go onto another page and only move the image when they get separates by more than one page.

If you position an object "In line with text," you can make use of the options that control the text flow in Word (basically the options on the Line and Page Breaks tab of the Paragraph dialog box).

For basic text wrapping, you can use table cells. Alternatively, you can wrap a frame around a graphic and its caption (you can make use of the Insert Horizontal Frame command which can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar).

Note that all of these suggestions are quite different from using manual line breaks, tabs and spaces. You should try for yourself; you don't have to take my word for it.

Your ideal solution is not possible with floating shapes but it is easy with Inline shapes which plays straight into Stefan's suggestion. AFAIK you can't have an anchor on a different page to the graphic.

The point of 'fixed on page' is to always position the graphic at the same place on the page - but it is always going to be the same page as the START of the paragraph it is anchored to.

If you want to use a floating graphic on the page but don't want any line text to also be there then simply anchor to an empty paragraph. You can set the floating graphic to sit in front of the text if there isn't space for the empty paragraph to sit on but you will need that paragraph and the following paragraphs to have page break before turned on if you want the floating graphic on its own page. If you have two graphics taking up all the space, put two empty paras on that page and set the anchors to the correct paragraphs to get the numbering in the right order.
