Why do headings of the same type sometimes look different?
My Header3 always starts with no space between the number and header text and then changes in the next header, the same header 3
I have checked all the settings that I can see. I cannot seem to find anything that would explain this behavior... I have attached a picture of this, as I am not sure if I am explaining it well. What is causing this? I know it has nothing to do with the length of the header 3 text because I have tried different lengths. Thanks |

Without actually seeing the problem document, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue. The most likely explanation is that the headings have different tab-stops. If that's not the cause, can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Most likely, you have to adjust the tab stop position following the heading number (to accommodate the wider digits).

In most fonts, though, digits all have the same width.

Thanks for your reply. I have checked under Modify Style and then under Tabs, but the tab stops for all my headers are empty and clear (Alignment Left & Leader None). Is there anywhere else I can check for this to see if this is the cause?

Thanks Stefan, Where do I do this? Under Modify Style and then under Tabs, I can see that the tab stops for all my headers are the same (Alignment Left & Leader None)...

Hi Paul, I should have said "wider numbers," meaning more digits, not "wider digits." Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

Sorry, since you are using Word for Mac I can't provide the exact steps. I only use Word on a PC, myself. In Word for Windows, though, you will have to make use of the Multilevel List dialog box to specify the indentation and tab stops around bullets or numbers. See attached image file.

Use How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. While written for Windows versions, the steps are the same on the Mac. The controls may be in slightly different locations. |

Thank you. I found it and experimented with it, but could not modify them in the existing headers, so I just ended up reducing the font size of my problematic header 3 which solved the problem.
