dialog box is open
Every time I open an exiting word document I received the message below before the document opens. How do I get rid of the message. It just started happening about two week ago.
The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxes to continue. Thank you! |

Even when you restart the computer?

Yes, even when I restart. I am using word 2007 and windows 10. I noticed if I open word and then go to an existing document and open it. It does not happen.

Disable any addins that you might have loaded and see if that removes the message. If so, enable them one at a time until you find the culprit.
Do you have macros in your Normal template?

I check no macros. I think it is something with File Explorer. It only happens if I open the document in File explorer. If I open word first and then the document it does not appear. Thank you for your help.

Doing a google search reveals you aren't the first person to have this problem. I myself remember having a similar issue years ago but it was so far back I can't remember how I fixed it.
What virus checking software are you running? Do a google search with your error message and the name of the virus check software and see if you get a hit that helps.

Dialog Box is open - error
Hi Just to say I get the same error message when trying to open MSWord documents from within File Explorer. I have done a google search (which is how I found this, and older, threads) but so far none of the suggested solutions have worked for me. For example, there is no "Protected View" option displayed under the Trust Centre settings (a proposed solution from a thread in 2014), nor can I find any templates in the STARTUP folder to delete. I don't believe I have any macros in my default template either.
Any further suggestions would be most welcome as the error is becoming very tiresome!! |

Hello,
I never fixed it. I tried a number of options and it did not work. It is still doing it. |

Try starting Word in Safe Mode (i.e. hold down the Ctrl key while starting Word).

ALT+Tab should allow you to cycle through the open windows, which may help you identify what the errant dialog box is.

Thank you all for your replies. Alt-tab simply confirms that there are no dialog boxes open. So it seems that this bug (possibly linked to File Explorer) has been happening for years and has not been resolved?! Are there any Microsoft Developers monitoring this forum? With all the updates we are constantly being forced to install I'd have hoped for a patch by now... sigh!

Since no-one else is reporting this error, it evidently has something to do with either your document, your Office installation, or your Windows setup. Accordingly, it's unlikely Microsoft would issue a patch to correct a flaw affecting just one person. Your contention "this bug (possibly linked to File Explorer) has been happening for years" is unfounded, especially given your original claim that "It just started happening about two week ago".
If the problem affects just one document, it's possible the document has acquired some of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it. If the problem all affects documents based on the same template, it's possible the template has acquired some of corruption. Except for Word's 'Normal' template, corrupt templates can be repaired in much the same way as one would repair documents. With Word's 'Normal' template, the simplest approach is to navigate to: Code:
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\ You might also try repairing the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair).

He is not alone. I have had this problem for months and it happens with every document.
I have reinstalled Word and removed addins without any effect. I have seen a suggestion that it could be caused by McAfee but I am unwilling to disable realtime protection. I have just renamed the Normal template and opened a document and there was no message. I then closed the document and reopened it and the message reappeared. |
