xref to heading 5.1 stubbornly displays 0 as heading number
Like it says on the tin :-} I'm adding domain-specific answers to a questionnaire provided by a third party, and I want to include a cross-ref to one of their headings. The cross-ref dialogue box correctly recognizes that there's a heading 5.1 in the document, but all I see in the text is 0
Any ideas? |

Aaaaaaargh … problem solved, or at least analysed. The ninnies who prepared the original document didn't use auto-numbering! so while 5.1 is indeed part of the heading, poor ol' Word cannot recognise and refer to it.

As I'm sure you alread know, you can bookmark the typed number and insert a cross-reference to bookmark text. This will be vulnerable, of course, if someone updates the typed number and accidentally deletes the bookmark in the process.

"Knowing" and "remembering" are of course two different things … so thanks for the reminder. 'More than one way to skin a cat' :-}
