I connected my external HDD to my computer and it found the device. I opened a Word file. clicked on the top left File then Save As, clicked to have it sent to my external HDD then Save but a msg said that I had to get permission from the administrator. So what did I do wrong?

You should not be opening the file on your external drive using Word. You should instead use File Manager to drag the file to a suitable folder on your HDD. The you can open the file on your HDD with Word.
