Default Style cannot be found

I have brought up a document and created a style from it. But when I try to format a new file with this style, the style is not shown in the style list.

I would also like to modify or remove this style. But since I can't find it, that is not an option.

However, when I try to create another style by the same name, I am told that this name already exists.

Help.

How did you create the Style and to what template did you attach it?

If you created the style in a document, it will only be available to that document unless you explicitly copied it to another document or template.

Since you are getting the message that the style already exists then I would assume that you are not seeing it because the style list only shows the styles which are set to be visible.

Go to the Styles Pane and Manage Styles to see the complete list of styles including the 'hidden' ones. Read this link to help you to understand what is actually happening http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/DisplayStyles.htm.

Where / how did you look for the style?

If you only looked in the Styles Gallery on the Home tab, that is only a list of styles which have been designated to show in the Gallery. Most styles are not there.

What happens if you use the Apply Style dialog (Ctrl+Shift+S) and type in the style name?

You can view all styles in a document using the Styles Pane. You get this by clicking on the styles dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of the Styles group on the Home Tab. Then, when that pane shows up, use the Options (bottom right) to show all styles.

I have them displayed in alphabetical order.

As Charles pointed out, only some styles show up in the Style gallery on the Home tab. Note that the Styles pane does not show all styles, either. To see all style types in a document (table, list, character, paragraph), look in the Manage Styles dialog box.

To display the dialog box, click the Manage Styles icon in the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S).

For all style management options, you can click the Import/Export button which displays the Organizer dialog box.

Default Don't know

I studied how to make templates and was able to solve that way. Can't say what my exact hang up was before.
