Default Page-Numbering in Compatibility Mode Word Document

I created a lengthy document in Word, adding page numbers, saved what I had as a Document. When I opened it, it is converted to compatibility mode. It has NO page numbers.

When I chose Insert Page Number, it is NOT an option. [Can only see the words faintly] It is very frustrating!

Pls. advise how to insert page numbers or how can I get out of Compatibility Mode.
Thanks SO much!

I received this advice: "Without actually seeing the problem document, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen."

I am not attaching the lengthy Document but here is one that provides an example.
Attached Files
File Type: doc Thornton, Dozier.doc (45.0 KB, 9 views)

Compatibility Mode has nothing to do one way or another with whether you can add page numbers - you can insert them regardless of whether the document is in Compatibility Mode.

Without actually seeing the problem document, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

I agree that compatibility mode has nothing to do with entering page numbers.
Word has had the ability to add page numbers since before Windows.

See Page numbering /header / footer problems Word 2007 - 2016 and see if that describes your problem.

Here is more information on page numbers.

I had no trouble adding a page number to your document which was open in compatibility mode.

Kindly don't go editing your posts after they've been replied to. When you do that, no-one knows you've 'replied' that way.

As it is, there is nothing about your document that prevents a PAGE field being added to the page header. The reason you can't see the page header, though, is that you've saved the document in 'Web Layout View'. Switch to 'Print View' and all will be revealed. That said, there is no evidence your document has ever been saved with a PAGE field in the page header.
