Default Error! Reference source not found - Why

All

I use Word 2010 and have a long document saved as a (97-2003) .doc.
When I open it up and do a Print Preview all is fine, no errors but if I do a Print Preview a number of times it will give me close to 40 "Error! Reference source not found" errors.

I may add that no changes were made to the document.

I'm at a loss as to why I get these errors so any assistance greatly appreciated.

Kenenth

That would normally suggest there is a cross-reference in the document that points to a missing bookmark. The fact the error message doesn't always appear when you do a Print preview suggests the document has acquired some of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it.

Hi Paul

Apologies for the delay and many thanks for your response. Your solution seems to have fixed the issue as I haven't had a recurrence. Out of trying to have a clearer understanding, why does inserting a new paragraph & copying up to but not including that marker work?

Many thanks.

Kenneth

In Word, the final paragraph break delimits the content you see from all the metadata that manages the document's structure. Copying the final paragraph break is liable to replicate any metadata errors in the document it's copies to.
