Removing duplicate cross-reference entries in an index
Hello,
I have created an index using entries thanks to the "References" menu. For some entries, I used the "Cross-reference" option instead of displaying the current page number. If two entries are the same, and with the same cross-reference, each cross-reference is still displayed in the index. Is there a way to remove the duplicate cross-references in an index, without deleting manually each redundant entry ? My index currently looks like this: atom, 12, 28What I want it to look like: atom, 12, 28Thanks in advance ! |

Creating a proper index is a time-intensive task. This is true no matter which software you use.
See John McGhie's page: http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm Word does not contain any built-in method to take out redundant entries you've made. I'm sorry. |

It should be straightforward to write a short macro to do what you want. Can you post a word document with a sample of your index. It doesn't matter if the sample shows errors as it is the field codes that are needed

Index entry fields (XE) are formatted as hidden, so if you display hidden text you should be able to locate the duplicates. It is rather straightforward, unless there are many more duplicates than your example suggests, of course, in which case Find & Replace may be helpful.

Do be aware you cannot simply delete entries from the Index itself; as it is a field, the deleted entries will be reinstated immediately anything causes Word to refresh the field. You will need to delete the unwanted XE fields from the body of the document itself, then refresh the Index.
