First, you need to understand that page numbers are fields. They can be inserted in any shape that can contain text.

Is the shape you are talking about the blue rectangle?
If so, the page number can be inserted the same way other text is inserted.
Alt+Shift+P inserts a page number.

What is preventing you from doing this?

"Automatically."
The page number field automatically gives the number of the page on which it appears.

Have you considered using a template?
