I can' really understand what happened here (see attachment)

The section jumps wildly from 28 to 75, messing up my page numbers. It does this jump in the middle of some endnotes.

I really would like to avoid deleting all the section breaks and restart from scratch, as we are talking about many chapters here...

That is a LOT of sections. Is there a reason for this?
More sections generally means more complexity.

I suspect you'll be able to use the following:
Word Toolkit for Advanced Management of Headers and Footers

A single page can have more than one section, I've seen as many as eight in poorly designed documents!
Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word (Ribbon Versions)

It can be helpful to add the Section display to the Status Bar.

Well, I cancelled most of them, but that one keeps on coming out from nowhere. I will try the toolkit, thank you!

Note that Word may insert section breaks automatically; this happens if you change section-level formatting (such as the number of newspaper columns) for a selected range of text.

That way, a large number of sections may be added.

Sorry, I goofed and did not notice that you were on a Mac. I do not think the Toolkit will work. You can try it, it won't hurt. If it does work, please let us know.

With that number of section breaks, I am suspecting that it is a document converted from another format.
