Web addresses are not listed as links (underlined blue) in my Word documents.

Try pressing the spacebar after one - that's usually enough to convert one to an active hyperlink.

There is an autoformat option which converts all internet and network paths to hyperlinks.
I'm not sure if it is available via the standard interface but you can add the relevant button to your QAT - look for All Commands > AutoFormat... That button opens a dialog and you can check the options via a button there.

If your hyperlinks are indeed active links but they just don't look properly, you should modify the formatting of the built-in Hyperlink and FollowedHyperlink character styles.
