Word slow to open when creating new document from Excel
Hello!
I have an Excel spreadsheet that does calculations and then spits out the values in a Word document (a more formal version of the calculation that was done in Excel). Basically, the process is initiated in Excel through the push of a button that calls the Word template to create a new document. After the document is created, a series of dialogues pop up to request extra information (project title, project number, author, etc) and after the document is populated with the values from the Excel spreadsheet. My issue is that when a new document is created, it lags before the first dialogue pops up (for 30 sec to a min sometimes). A few things to note: -Both the Word and Excel files are located on a network -The lag is experienced only with Word Documents that are macro enabled |

Does the Word document have an attached template that is also located on the network? Does opening speed up if you put a copy of that template into your local User Templates folder?

Note also that overall performance will be better if you use early binding rather than late binding.

Given that the issues are network related, there's some thing you should check.
1. Word is Slow to Start, Print, or Load Documents When you start Word, it gathers information to use for document formatting and printing operations. If the files, drivers, or fonts are damaged, missing, or located on a remote server, Word can require more time to connect to the server and gather the information that it needs. If Word starts very slowly, or other operations, such as opening or printing documents, also are very slow, this may be due to any one or more of: • Microsoft Windows using a printer driver located on a network print server, instead of a local printer driver on your hard disk. When you use a remote printer driver, you may notice that it takes longer to change your default printer setting, and sometimes Word may print documents more slowly than you may expect. • Word is installed on your computer, but Word was once running from the network. When the computer is not connected to the network, there is a long delay when you are opening documents. • Fonts that are used in the Word document are damaged or missing from the system, and Word cannot substitute other fonts in the document. To resolve the issues, see: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280821 2. Documents with Attached Templates are Slow to Open When you open a Microsoft Word document when connected to a network, it may take longer than expected to open if the document has a template attached or linked and one of the following conditions is true: • The attached template, its folder, or its share is missing. • The attached template has been moved. • The attached template has been renamed. • A linked file referenced by the document is missing, has been moved or renamed. When a Word template is missing, Windows will try to locate the missing template multiple times. The process of locating a missing template may cause a Word document to take longer than expected to open. To resolve the template issues, see: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830561 If you're opening the file from a completely different location (e.g. at home instead of at work), simply disconnecting from the internet while opening the file can improve performance. If neither of the above applies & resolves the issue, I suggest you talk to the IT people; something may be amiss with the network.

So, I'm still having issues with the lag ... However I've discovered something interesting ...
The word documents for the calculations were using DDE field code before Microsoft disabled it, however now I'm using LINK field code in its place. I went into the registry to re-enable DDE to see if there was a difference in the time opening the documents and sure enough there was. DDE is far faster than LINK when opening documents ... Even when the templates are macro enabled. So this begs the question, why is the LINK field code slower? |

AFAIK, although the DDE and DDEAUTO fields have been deprecated, they're still available and functional. As for the LINK field, my understanding is that the default update behaviour changed when Office 2007 or 2010 was introduced. Microsoft used to have a Knowledge Base article on this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/970154]) but it seems to have been deleted. That may mean the behaviour's been reverted; or it may mean the patch doesn't apply to current Office versions. For the article's registry patch to reduce such delays:
1. Start Registry Editor. In Windows 10, go to Windows System> Run, then type regedit in the Run box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation. 2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey: Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\#\Word\Options 3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4. Type DelayOleSrvParseDisplayName, and then press ENTER. 5. Right-click DelayOleSrvParseDisplayName, and then click Modify. 6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK. 7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 8. Type NoActivateOleLinkObjAtOpen, and then press ENTER. 9. Right-click NoActivateOleLinkObjAtOpen, and then click Modify. 10. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK. 11. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
