Default Document Positioning Default

I recently upgraded Microsoft Word to 16.11.1. Previously, I had set documents to open in the left upper corner of the screen by moving them when they open otherwise, and when I reopen them at a later time, they open in the upper left of the screen. Also, they opened in the draft mode by default.

Since I upgraded, documents now open offcenter, and in Print mode. I can select View and make the changes, but when I open the document again nothing has changed and I again have to select the View and make the changes. This is tiresome, and I would like the changes to be permanent. What am I missing here?

I don't know if it has changed with your version but in my experience, Word documents remember the view and size they were last saved in. However, if you open a document and change the view WITHOUT making a real change to the document then that view won't be saved.

I am assuming you are on a Mac. If this truly bothers you enough, you may want to roll back to a previous version. There have been problems reported with the latest updates, especially on the High Sierra OS.

If you want to try this, write back and I'll provide the links.

In Word for Windows, the document position is remembered for the application as a whole, that is, it can't be saved with the document.

Also, recent versions of Word for Windows do NOT save the zoom and view with the document.

A year ago I purchased a new MacBook Pro Silver with the Sierra OS, and at the same time purchased the latest Microsoft Office. I recently "upgraded" the Sierra to 10.13.4, downloading it from the Apple WebSite. I downloaded the "upgrade" Microsoft Word 16.11.1 from the Microsoft WebSite.

It's really frustrating! For several years I have been working with Microsoft Word, setting up a positioning system that was solid and reliable. When I opened a document, it would go where I had set it up to be, and, in the format that I had set it up to be.

Since I can't position and format the documents now to stay that way, I have found that the "upgrade" turned out to be a "downgrade" instead, for me anyway.

It has been mentioned that users are having problems with version 16.9 and higher of Office. Office for the Mac has undergone dramatic changes in Office 2016. There have been a number of issues for people with the High Sierra OS. Developers are trying hard to make the Mac and Windows versions have the same or equivalent features. They are making real progress. However, fixing one thing sometimes breaks others.

You can use the User Feedback feature to let them know if they've broken something. There may be a fix coming soon. I’d suggest checking for updates - it may take several tries for Office to recognize that there is an update, so try checking a few times.

Here is the link about progress on Word:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...1-cce785db2004

In the meantime, I suggest using a previous version until it is fixed.

To do that, you’ll need to uninstall the current version, download the old version, and install it.

Here are the instructions on how to uninstall for Mac:

Here is the link to install the latest stable version:

Here is a link to allow you to choose an earlier release:

Here is a link to UserVoice to let the developers know what is causing you problems:

I recently updated Microsoft Office from 16.11.1 to 16.14.1. Now, when I select the Draft View, it stays there, which is what I wanted.

However, the document positioning selection has not changed. Documents still open in some random position on the desktop, and I have to reposition them to where I want them to be. I don't have this problem with the Excel documents.

What do I have to do to make the Word documents open in the position they were at when I closed them?

And another thing: under the new Word, the new documents open with 90% font size by default. I change it to 100%, do some work on the document, save it, close it, and when I open it again, it's back to 90% again.

How do I make it stay at 100%?

90% font size means what exactly?

Are you talking about document view zoom? Or a font size change?

I probably shouldn't have used the term "font size". On the document, in the bottom right it shows 90% sizing. I select it and change the zoom to 100% because the lettering is so tiny. But it doesn't stay that way.

In my experience, Word remembers window position from the last time Word was open.

It remembers the view zoom settings on a document by document basis with one caveat. If the document was already saved and then you change the zoom and close the file, it doesn't save that change and therefore can't recall the final zoom. The simple fix for this is to change the zoom and then make minor text change eg add a space and then delete it again so you can save.

It is possible that updates to Word have broken these standard behaviours but it is more likely that you have an addin or macro running something that causes the zoom or window position to not be recalled.

In recent versions (Word 2016 and 2013), the behavior for view and zoom is different. Word no longer saves the view and zoom with the document. You'll need a macro by MVP Jay Freedman for the saving to occur (look for the SaveView2013.zip file at https://jay-freedman.info/).

The window size and position should still be saved, though.
