Default Font color changes in template created in word 2016 and opened in 2010

Modified/updated a template created in Word 2010 by opening it in 2016 and making changes and it was saved with maintain compatibility checked. It was then sent to someone with Windows 7, Word 2010 via email. It was not opened, but was downloaded to their system and then uploaded to a web page for users to download to whatever system they are running. It was then downloaded to a system using Windows 7, Word 2010 and the font for some of the page numbers in the table of contents was changed to red. When checked in the styles applied, the font is set to black. So, then checked the style based on for that style and it was normal, which is also set to black. Should we just start with a new template since this seems to be corrupt?

I suspect this has nothing to do with Word 2010 / 2016.

I am thinking the most likely reason the TOC would become red is because revision tracking is turned on and the user has an option that updates the fields automatically on open. Can you confirm if Revision Tracking is turned on?

No, it was not. I am thinking that the template, which was originally created with Word 2003 or at the outside, 2010 had become corrupt. It behaved badly when I first opened it with 2016 and I felt its' days were numbered. Just recreated it and the problem is gone. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
