Issue with line breaks and paragraph breaks in bullet point document
So I use Word for typing my college notes. I predominantly use bullet points because I feel they are easy to learn off.
I start at the top of the page and I write my first bullet point. Then I hit enter and there is a line break put in and a new bullet point (which is what I want). Then when I move onto a new section in my notes I hit enter twice to create a paragraph break. I then type my first bullet point on this new topic. I hit enter then hoping that a line break (and a bullet point) is put in but unfortunately a paragraph break (and a bullet point) is always put in instead (this is my problem!). I want a line break here. I then have to backspace a few times to fix this. I presume there is some way I can customise this in word for my own computer. *Triceps *Biceps *Lattisimus Dorsi *Rhomboideus *Arteries *Veins (I have tried to illustrate this above. I have started my first section with muscles then placed a paragraph break for blood vessel types0 but after my first bullet point (arteries) it has automatically placed a paragraph break in instead of a line break. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Shift+Enter gives you a line break.

You cannot have line breaks between automatic bullet points. You can only have paragraph breaks. But you can change the Line Spacing value of such paragraphs to 1, or even to 0.9 or 0.5 if suitable.

Shift + Enter
Thanks but when you are using bullet points and you use Shift + Enter, an automatic bullet does not appear. Is there any way around this?

There is no way around this. Except if you create manual (non-automatic, pure text) lists.

If you just want to reduce the spacing between bulleted items, you will have to decrease the values for Line Spacing and Spacing Before/After (Paragraph dialog box).
If you have set up a bulleted style, you can easily change these settings in the style itself (via the Modify Style dialog box).

Thank You. It worked. That's what I wanted.
I wanted to start my bullet point text (the text that follows the bullet icon) to start on new line. Shift+Enter is what it gives. |

A slower alternative is to set up two styles, perhaps :label and :info – :label is bulleted, :info is indented to match the bullet settings, and the two are linked with the 'Style for following paragraph' option.
Then you'll be able to adjust the formatting as required, generate a ToC with just the bullet points, set :label to hidden and use the list like flash cards … all sorts of fun :-} |
