Stubborn TOC problem, one heading allows dot leader everywhere except one place.
I am testing a template with a TOC created in 2010, updated in 2016 and it needs to function in W7 Word 2010, W7 Word 2013, W7 Word 2016, W10 Word 2013 & W10 Word 2016. It works in the W7 Word 2013, W7 Word 2016 environments but not in the others, you have to hit the tab key once to get the dot leader to appear with the Pg. # If these are the same template why do they behave differently in different test areas? I have looked at the tabs and set them all up identically manually in each test env. but do not get the same result. Is there a setting somewhere else that controls this that is also in all versions of Word?

The tab settings are in the TOC styles. Set them so that the dot leader appears in all versions. To do that, adjust them in the setup that causes problems and they should be fine in the others.

No I removed all tab settings except for the one that puts the page number across the page and it is set up with a dot leader. The one thing that I am concerned about is that in the document itself, this is the Appendix section and it has the same Hdg 1 style applied that is applied to the other Hdg 1 sections. However, the client wants it to look different in the document, so even though it has Hdg 1 applied it does not have a number as the other sections do and it is centered. Would that effect the way it works in the TOC?

Try, instead, using Heading 9 for your Appendices or Headings 7-9 if you need three levels. You can format them to look the same as those in the main part. How to number headings and figures in Appendixes in Microsoft Word by Shauna Kelly Set your TOC styles to match. |

It is well worth exploring the switches for the TOC field, particularly the \b and \t switches.
The \b switch restricts the headings included in the toc to the defined bookmark. The \t switch allows a comma separated list of styles names and outline level. I have documents with many toc in them which are managed quite well with appropriate use of the \t and \b switches. I've included a selection below. Overall table of contents {toc \b TOC_ALL \t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2,S Heading 1,1,P Heading 1,1,A Heading 1,1,A Heading 2,2,R Heading 1,1, R Heading 2,2,TOC Heading,2,TOF Heading,2,2, Title,1, ,TOC Heading, 1, TOF Heading,1" \h } Module 1 TOC {toc \b TOC_API1 \z \t "S Heading 1,1,S Heading 2,2,S Heading 3,3, S Heading 4,4, TOC Heading,1,TOF Heading,1, Title,1" \h } TOC of a section within Module 1 {toc \b TOC_32s22 \z \t "S Heading 4,1,S Heading 5,2,S Heading 6,3, S Heading 7,4, TOC Heading,1,TOF Heading,1, Title,1" \h } The link for the switches for the TOC field is below https://support.office.com/en-ie/art...rs=en-IE&ad=IE |

Thank you, this is very interesting. Unfortunately, I will not be able to use it in the current situation because they will not have anyone to carry on maintenance, so simple is better, this time. But it adds to my education and I always appreciate that.
