Default Unresponsive, uneditable UI in advanced Search/Replace

I'm trying to use the Advanced Search/Replace feature in my 2011 version of Word.
I was able to toy with it on a few examples, but now the Advanced Search/Replace window seems frozen : even though the "Search" field has editable appearance (bright color, live cursor inside it), I cannot do any editing in it, my keystrokes seem to have zero effect. The "Replace" field on the other hand has uneditable appearance.

Any help appreciated.

Steve, I am not a Mac user and few of the regular responders here are. Please be patient with us.

One document or in general?

Do you have the latest updates for both Word and your OS?

Is this your first foray into using the Advanced Find feature?

It is, obviously. See below.

Please forgive me for not having thought of that. I opened a new document, copy-pasted the content, and everything worked fine.

It may be that editing in your problem document is restricted in some way.
