styles in current document
Hi I have a home made dotx for script writing and I have a set of personal styles that work. When I open the separate styles list by clicking on the small arrow in styles. I see all the styles. I can using the options select [In use] [In current document]
I want [In current document] but if I start off with a blank piece of paper then this is empty as I have no styles in use. I thought that I could do a miniature set of in use styles but make them invisible i.ie white. Can someone have a look at my dotx. Page ZERO the title page has an invisible text box which I have made visible to show you. The text is invisible. Thanks TIA Sorry the box is at the bottom of title page on the left. Desmond. Why not simply add your other styles to the Quick Styles Gallery?

Hi Desmond
What you need to do is go into the import / export option of the styles Assuming Office 2016 / 365 - should work with 2013 1st press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S to open the Styles box Then click on manage styles Lastly open the import / export dialog Now if you have done this in the document you have your styles you will be able to select them in the left hand box, and move them to the right hand which is the Normal.dot document = this will now give you your special fonts in every new document. edit - i had included pictures but they dont seem to be showing Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 03-11-2018 at 07:40 AM. Reason: Changed color of non-link so it does not appear as a link. |

I really need the separate drop down list as the ribbon would be to wide for the different styles. What I can't understand is if the styles are in use on the title page (hidden by making then white on a white background), why are they not in the drop down seperate list. |

Is your style marked to "Hide" when it should be marked "Show?" Rather that show styles in use, show styles in the document and mark the other ones to be hidden. That way, you do not need the white text which can cause you problems. |

Sorry you guys have totally missed the point. In the document I attached there are styles that I have created.
Does anyone know what the option [In use] as opposed to [In current document]? I believe not. Let me explain. If you have styles that you have added and you select [In use] you will not see them in the list until you ACTUALLY USE THEM. I have used them. They are in the title page of the script. They are made white to make them invisible. If I use any of my styles [DIALOGUE], [CHARACTER] then they will appear in the [IN USE] list. Why do you not understand the problem and tell me how to import styles that are already their. |

Sorry. I tried to help you see the styles you want to see.
I do not rely on styles in use. I've never found it useful since it does not simply show styles in use. You can hide styles you do not want used. You can make them appear or not appear in the Quick Styles Gallery. I wish you luck. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 03-17-2018 at 06:59 PM. |

Although Word has an 'In Use' property for styles, it is completely misleading since in practice it means 'was used or defined at some stage in the past history of this document or template but may not currently be applied to anything in the active document at this moment in time'. Adding to that, the 'In Use' setting is read only so it is completely worthless.
If you want to manipulate the appearance or non-appearance of styles in the various style lists then you do that by manipulating either the Visibility property or the QuickStyle property. You can do that one at a time by modifying each styles properties, or you can create and run a macro to do it at the click of a button.

Why do people not read any of these posts correctly?
Guessed: but may not currently be applied to anything in the active document at this moment in time'. It is in use in the document. I did post the document as PROOF. I willl POST it again. |

If you are not getting your point across accurately and, thus, not receiving the information that you want, "maybe" there is something amiss with you inquiry!
In any event, your response with comments quoted above is surely to deter any poster from providing helpful assistance. |

Like yourself I have a set of styles that I use and I want to see these in the style pane and no others. You do this by including and excluding styles from the 'Recommended' set of styles. They will then appear in the style pane irrespective of their being applied to any text in the document If you approach this problem programmatically then there is a GOTCHA as the visible property of a style refers to whether or not a style is hidden or not hidden in the style pane. Thus visible = true actually HIDES the style because it really means Hidden = true. Even when you restrict the Styles visible in the style pane you may see styles that are similar to yours but which you did not define. This means that you have used a style but in applying it have made a slight change somewhere in the paragraph. You can't delete these styles without losing the effect in the paragraph but you can hide them from being seen in the style pane by switching off the check boxes Paragraph, font and/or bullet and numbering in the Style Pane options checkbox. The visibility property of a style has no bearing on whether text with the style applied is visible or not visible a document. The only way to do this is to use the font 'Hidden' property which is completely separate from the style visibility property. |

The style pane (which is what you get when you click the little arrow on the style tab) has a preview box 'Show Preview'. If this box is ticked then your styles will be shown using the appearance you have defined for your style; If this check box is ticked then you may well be looking at white text on a white background in the style pane.
Why do you say this slaycock This has got SOD all to any preview box. I never said anything about preview. Hi I have a home made dotx for script writing and I have a set of personal styles that work. When I open the separate styles list by clicking on the small arrow in styles. I see all the styles. I can using the options select [In use] [In current document] If I click the drop down box In the style pain you have an option Select styles to show -> IN CURRENT DOCUMENT. I am using styles that I have created they are on the title page. Are you all bloody blind. One the Title page there is a small box bottom write with ALL the styles IN BLOODY USE. Is there a forum with Microsoft people that they can answerer the question correctly and read my problem which I have explained in the English Language. |

Just crested your own questions to answer. |

Hi
It looks like your word skills mean you don't have the wherewithall to understand the advice you have been given. So lets start again. I've looked at your dotx and it seems that your personal styles all use capitals for their style name. So what I've done is to set the 'Recommended' styles to show the styles with capitalised styles names plus normal. This means that when you select 'Recommended' styles as apposed to 'In Use' or 'In current document' you will get a list of styles in the style pane that is comprised of your styles plus normal only. This will be true even when you start with a new document. You can tweak this by Hiding or Showing the styles you want in the Recommended styles. |
