You want the right-tab if that is where you want your page number. You want that tab to have a dot leader. You may not want the 1" one at all. This is dealt with in the styles for each level of the table. Look again at TOC Tips and Tricks. When you said the Appendix headings have certain tab settings, those are irrelevant to the TOC for the Appendix. It is the styles in the TOC itself.
