Question Using 2016, create a TOC, add TOC for figures, exhibits and appendices.

Can I use Auto Tables for the main TOC and then add Exhibits, Figures and Appendices TOCs? Do they have to be custom tables, the added ones? Can you mix Auto and Custom TOCs? To make this work do I need to have a style for the heading levels in each of the custom tables?

For what you are doing, you need, at least, to read the last three articles in full. Bookmark them. The first one is background and will have information you do not need right now. It gives an overview of a number of Word features involved in what you are doing.

I was able to generate the TOC for the Appendix. However, when updating the entire table, the dot leaders do not extend across the page. The individual Appendixes show up, the dot leaders are there, but there is only one tab indicator showing even though the Appendix heading are set up for 1" and 6.5". Do I need to add another tab in between to make the dot lead extend across the page as well as the page number? I have read and tried many of the exercises on the sites you sent me because they seem like they would change this, but nothing changes. And the last tab at 6.5" is a right tab, not a left tab. I tried changing that but nothing happened. Obviously I missed something.

You want the right-tab if that is where you want your page number. You want that tab to have a dot leader. You may not want the 1" one at all.
This is dealt with in the styles for each level of the table.
Look again at TOC Tips and Tricks.

When you said the Appendix headings have certain tab settings, those are irrelevant to the TOC for the Appendix. It is the styles in the TOC itself.

Here is a screenshot of setting up the numbering.

Here is a screenshot with a TOC.

The field shown askew at the top is the TOC field.
This shows the Styles you would want to be modifing.
