Default Drawing object snap grid bug

I have been struggling with some object snap and alignment issues when in Word 2013 and am interested if there are fixes. I've verified the behavior on several PC so not specific to mine.

When using the end handles on a line or arrow word will prevent the line being dragged either vertical or horizontal. i.e. it will obey snap points until the next snap make the line vertical or horizontal. It will instead have some weird off grid snaps that are just each side of vertical or horizontal.

Oddly an object like a line can be drawing initially vertical or horizontal. If it is then dragged to be an odd angle it can never be dragged back. I work a lot with shapes for diagrams so having to constantly delete and redraw is a major handicap.

Also if the file is saved as 2007 format (.doc not .docx) then the issue disappears. Unfortunately we need the docx format for other reasons.
