How do I create paragraphing in an outline?
I'm working on a lengthy outline with numbered points. In some of these items are paragraphed sections. When I was working in MS Word 2010 on Windows 10, I would hit return, which would create another numbered item, but I would then press delete which removed the new outline number. Then I would press the tab button to indent for the paragraph.
I'm now working in MS Word 2016 for Mac, and that trick doesn't work. No matter what I do, I cannot indent a paragraph within a numbered outline point. How do I now create a paragraph in a numbered outline item? Thanks. |

In many ways, Word 2010 in Windows is more advanced than Word 2016 on the Mac. Get used to it.
I strongly urge you to link your numbering to styles following the directions at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. Use a change of style to change whether or not a paragraph in numbered. You can use the attribute in the style definition, if you want, to set the style for the following paragraph. |

Thank you, Charles. After some experimenting, I decided to remove all the formatting and try again--manually.
Yes, I uncovered a quick disappointment with MS Office 2016 for Mac when I saw that in Word, one cannot customize the ribbon. Sheesh. |

As for customizing the Ribbon, you can do it with XML. I suspect much would be best done in a Windows environment and ported, though. Although I no longer use a Mac, I have it on good authority that such customizations do work in the Mac version 2016. Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science) That web page was originally written for Word 2007 which had no way to change the ribbon through the user interface within Word. However, the XML methods give you a far superior modification that can be stored in individual templates that can be used as Add-Ins. It isn't easy, but it can be done. The basic book on this is RibbonX: Customizing the Office Ribbon by Robert Martin, Ken Puls, and Teresa Hennig |
