How do I create paragraphing in an outline?

I'm working on a lengthy outline with numbered points. In some of these items are paragraphed sections. When I was working in MS Word 2010 on Windows 10, I would hit return, which would create another numbered item, but I would then press delete which removed the new outline number. Then I would press the tab button to indent for the paragraph.



I'm now working in MS Word 2016 for Mac, and that trick doesn't work. No matter what I do, I cannot indent a paragraph within a numbered outline point.

How do I now create a paragraph in a numbered outline item?
