Default FileFormatConverters.exe installation

Word 2003 running under XP.

I wanted to be able to look at *.DOCX files and understood that FileFormatConverters.exe would do the trick. The install program tells me it's already installed and has to be uninstalled. But Control Panel's ADD/REMOVE doesn't list it. Inside Word, HELP > ABOUT does not have any disabled items.

Any advice for being able just to read *.DOCX ?

EDIT: Tried wordview_en-us.exe which did install and seemed ready to open the file (offered me a read-only version). But then it told me there was an error opening the file.
