Default how to delete a citation in word 2007

I need to delete an end note. When I insert one, it automatically changes the number of the end notes, great. But when I delete one it doesnt. Not so great.
I have been told to right click on the note but this does nothing.
Any suggestions?

To delete an endnote, click on the endnote reference in the body of the document and delete that.

I tried that and the references dont update. Im deleting reference 17 in my document and so i expect 18 to change into 17, but it doesn't. Any way to solve this?

Are you using 'Track Changes'? If so, the references #s won't update until the relevant changes are accepted/rejected.
