This is what I get, trying to read Word 97 texts. Also with 93 texts.

Do you have any problem with current Word documents?

I have no current problems with current word docs

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Have you tried opening the documents on another computer? If you get the same results there, the files are probably corrupt. In that case, you may be able to recover some readable content using Word's 'recover text from any file' opening option, but all formatting, graphics, etc. will be lost.
