Proofing Language Changes do Not Take Effect
Upon discovering that my spellchecker was operating in French I did Review -> Language -> Set Proofing Language and changed to English (US). I also unchecked "Detect Language Automatically". No love. I confirmed that the setting had indeed been changed by re-doing the Review -> Language -> Set Proofing Language sequence and noting that English (US) was indeed what had been selected. |

The proofing language setting operates very much like character formatting. It is a setting for a single word, or even character. It is not a document setting. It is not a setting for Word as a whole.
It is often contained in Styles. Click in a word that is showing up as misspelled. Then press Shift+F1. Word's Reveal Formatting Codes Mastering the Spelling Checker |

As a start, for this document,
If you have styles set to automatically update from your formatting, they can pick this up and make it part of the style definition. Text copied in from another Word document can carry the formatting as well, includiing in styles. I hope that has not happened. If you still have problems, feel free to write back. |

I was confronted with a very similar issue when reviewing a document several people had cobbled together with copy/paste … I used ctrl+A and changed the language setting in the status bar, but this does not seem to trump any "lower-level" settings in styles or paragraphs :-{

The following macro should set each style to EnglishUS. Code:
Sub StyleEnglishUS() ' Written 14 December 1017 ' Charles Kenyon ' Intended to set all styles to English US, proofing, not automatitically update ' Dim aStyle As Style For Each aStyle In ActiveDocument.Styles aStyle.AutomaticallyUpdate = False ' probably do not want this for TOC styles - future work aStyle.LanguageID = wdEnglishUS aStyle.NoProofing = False Next 'aStyle ActiveDocument.UpdateStylesOnOpen = False End Sub Installing Macros |

You can omit the lines about automatically update and noproofing. This would make it a bit cleaner.

Thanks, Charles! I've been away from the office for a long end-of-year break …

Thanks for the feedback everyone; I have yet to try all the suggestion as I had to move on to other things at work. But please be assured - I will try everything suggested.
