I don't know how this happened but the full text of my document, including titles and everything, is shown as a column of one letter per line, aligned to the left, as shown in the picture. Also, the rulers disappeared, even though the option to show them is turned on, both in the view tab and in the advanced options.

The is no picture attached to your post - just a box where it should be. I suspect you've done something to mess up the page margins and/or the right paragraph indent, but can't tell without seeing the actual document. Can you attach the document to a post (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.
